Carolyn McCarthy, a politician from New York that spawned this website's name, introduced legislation in the 108th Congress on May 8, 2003 that would ban the Benelli M1 Super 90 family of shotguns.

In addition to these shotguns, the proposed legislation would ban any other shotgun that was, "procured for use by the United States military or any Federal law enforcement agency." Her stated purpose was that these shotguns were not suitable for "sporting purposes." Luckily, the bill did not pass. However, her efforts continue to the present day.

In the video below, Tom Knapp, a world class shooter, shows off some of his skills with a Benelli semi-automatic shotgun. You can decide for yourself whether these weapons have no sporting purposes.
